 MEDIA
Smarts Girls Meet the Press
Media
Smarts March Break madness was an exciting fun-filled week
for girls to learn about the media, advertising and entertainment.
Girls between the ages of 9-12 joined Tracy McCannell,
Program Coordinator at Girls Inc. of Durham for an exhilarating
week of hands-on activities, local field trips, and special
guest speakers.
The
girls critically analyzed media images, stereotypes, and
identified hidden messages and various media tools used
to persuade consumers. The program allowed the girls to
break down the media’s messages and decipher between
make-believe and reality. The girls visited the Pickering
Town Centre, where they did a scavenger hunt to find various
media stereotypes. It was a highly successful week that
combined fun and a great deal of interaction. The girls
got to understand stereotypes that are present in the media
and how to overcome them.
A special
visit by talented Rogers Television reporter Crystal Claire,
and then being featured on the Durham-specific news program
First Local, was a special thrill for the girls. Work is
currently under way to post a public service announcement
here on our website that the girls helped to create. CLICK

 Gear
Girls - What YOU had to Say...
All
of our Girls Inc. programs are outcome-based,and we rely
on the evaluations of our participants to help make our
programs better. Recently, our Gear Girls Summer
Camps finished up. We
all had an excellent time exploring the disciplines of
engineering and machining, and we asked you, "How
you felt about the program?"
This
is what you said:
1.
Did you enjoy being in the program GEAR GIRLS? Yes
- We got to meet new people and hang out with fun counselors
and do cool things.
2.
How would you rate the program? 4 (out of 5)
3.
What did you enjoy the MOST about the program? Hanging
out and doing experiments.
4.
What did you enjoy the LEAST about the program? Going
home time.
5.
What did you learn about engineers and machinists? They
have hard jobs and have to be precise.
6.
Were you happy with your instructors? Yes -
because they listened to you.
7.
If you could change anything about the program, what
would it be? More time together like from 9
- 9, instead of 9 - 4.
8.
Will you tell your friends about Girls Inc. GEAR GIRLS? Yes
- because they would enjoy this too.
Bridges
the Gear Girls built amongst themselves, in the forms of
cherished friendships, will last longer than the model
beam, arch and suspension bridges that they constructed.
We loved having your participation, and we hope to see
your smiling faces back for another fun Girls Inc. program
soon!
