1. Board Volunteers
Volunteer on our Board of Director committees- as a registered charity, we're
governed by a dedicated volunteer board of directors who are
representative of our community and provide direction for
our organization. A number of special committees also help
organize our varied activities. Currently we are looking for volunteers to sit on various Board Committees.
The Standing Board Committees are:
THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The purpose of the Executive Committee is to continually review organizational risk and plan and implement mitigation strategies to reduce organizational risk. The Board of Directors has elected the members of this committee.
THE BOARD DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE The board development committee determines the composition of the board by identifying, recruiting, and proposing new board members. The Board Development Committee is also responsible for Volunteer Management and it drives the direction of the education and integration of volunteers to the Girls Inc. organization.
THE PROGRAM COMMITTEE The program committee is the link between board and staff on the organization's programs and activities. It advises and makes recommendations to the Board with regard to programs offered by the agency.
THE FUNDCOM DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE: The purpose of the Fund Development and Communications committee is to plan and carry out fundraising ventures and funder care, which generate the necessary capital for the operation of the agency. Ventures are planned with that in mind and reflect a public image appropriate to Girls Incorporated of Durham. Special events etc. must be consistent with all policies of our agency. In addition, this committee works towards raising the profile of Girls Incorporated of Durham in the community. Its membership includes Board members as well as other individuals with a background or interest in fundraising, publicity, marketing, media, etc. All members of the committee are familiar with the long-range plan of the agency and its mission.
THE FINANCE COMMITTEE The purpose of the Finance committee is to plan and carry out funding requirements necessary for the operation of the agency. All members of the committee are familiar with the long-range plan of the agency and its mission.
2. Event Committee Volunteer Opportunities
Annual Golf Tournament-(Event date Tues. June 15, 2010) Committee meets from September to June- Once a year Girls Incorporated of Durham holds a Charity Golf Tournament in the month of June, and is looking for new committee volunteers for next year's tournament. The committee is made up of Girls Inc. staff, board members and community volunteers. The Golf committee usually meets once a month in the evening from 7:00 pm- 9:30 pm at our Girls Inc office in Ajax.
Girls Day Out! Event- (Spring date Sat. March 27, 2010) Committee meets from September to March- Girls Day Out is a play day fundraiser that gives women 19 years or older a chance to spend a day at Trafalgar Castle School in Whitby. This day allows moms, daughters, sisters and girlfriends to be in school for a day and participate in a wide range of classes from martini making to belly dancing. This day is sure to create memories, knowledge, fun and laughter! Girls Day Out committee will meet once a month in the evening from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at our Girls Inc. office in Ajax. Volunteer Orientation is scheduled on March 2010 at 7:00pm at the Girls Inc. office in Ajax.
3. General Volunteer Opportunities

United Way Ajax/Pickering/Uxbridge "Bon Appetit" Kick Off Event- Sunday September 2010 (11:30am-2:30 pm)- United Way "Bon Appetit is a showcase of community culture through a taste tour. Girls Inc. is in charge of children's face painting and conducting interactive experiments that help showcase the kind of programs we offer. This is a great way for high school students to gain some community hours for graduation and to get involved in the community.
Pumpkinville Event- Saturday October 2010- Pumpkinville is an event where children of all ages will have a great time with activities such as making straw scarecrow family, playing on the Ghost Ship, sliding down the Boot slide, picking pumpkins, horse drawn wagon rides, face painting , science activities and much more. Girls Inc. has a booth that generally needs 10 volunteers to help conduct science experiments.
Ajax Santa Clause Parade- Saturday November 2010- The Town of Ajax Annual Santa Claus Parade is a wonderful way for the community to come together during a joyous season. Girls Inc. would like to enter a float into the parade this year, but we need your help! We need as many people as possible to make this a successful event for Girls Inc. so the more people we have to help the better.
Maple Syrup/ Pancake Festival at Purple Wood Conservation Area- Saturday & Sunday in March 2011- The Maple Syrup Festival at Purple Woods Conservation Area in Oshawa is a great way to have fun with the family while enjoying the Canadian winter, eating hot fluffy pancakes and freshly made maple syrup. We need at least 8 volunteers on each day to be an effective team and to run the event smoothly. This is a great way for high school students to gain 15 hours of volunteer service hours within two days.
Girls Day Out!- Spring Sat. March 2011-Would you like to be a class instructor at our next Girls Day Out! fundraiser? We are looking for fun and exciting classes to offer the women of the Girls inc community. This is an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your talent to women of Durham Region and help us raise needed funds to support our programming. You can expect to have a class of 10-12 women for 1.5 hours. You also have the opportunity to present your business in one of the booths provide. Thirdly, you can donate your services as a silent auction item to help advertise your business.
Racing Against Drugs- April-May 2011-This is a community event where Girls Inc. has a interactive booth. Volunteers are needed to assist in the delivery of Racing Against Drugs activities, serve as a positive role model, and build a relationship with the children involved while enthusiastically engaging in activities.
20 Minute Makeover- April 2011 -The 20 Minute Makeover Challenge engages students and businesses to volunteer just 20 minutes of their time to make a world of difference. During this event, volunteers will pick up litter in designated areas. This event shows community members that Girls Inc. care about the environment. We would like to register as many people as possible and give them a Girls Inc. t-shirt to wear during the clean up.
Girls Rights Week- May 1, 2010 kick off celebration- Girls Rights Week is a great opportunity for high school students to earn some of their 40 hours needed to graduate. Our celebration of Girls Rights Week is normally held on a Saturday between 10:00am-4:00 Pm at a local library or community centre. During the day's celebration we aim to show parents and girls of Durham Region what programs we offer during the year through interactive experiments booths and craft tables. For 2010 we are looking for a maximum of 10 volunteers to make this day run smoothly. There are various tasks that students are able to do during this day. 4. Girls Inc. Program Volunteer Opportunities
As part of the Girls Inc. network,
we'll be able to offer high-quality,
curriculum-based programs on topics of special importance
to girls. These include math, science and technology;
economic literacy; personal safety; health and well-being;
leadership; media literacy and more. These unique programs
have been developed following extensive research. They are
highly relevant, skill-based and fun! Our programs are made possible
by the time and expertise contributed by both volunteers and
